The run’s most unforgiving black cover — it shows every flaw — carries Lon Chaney Sr.’s unmasked Erik, painted against the dark; Warren brought the image back on the 1969 annual and again on Issue #171. Inside, Robert Bloch’s original story “The Clown at Midnite” gives Issue #16 a place in Bloch bibliographies.
