CGC (Certified Guaranty Company) is the third-party standard for comic book grading. Each book is authenticated, assigned a numerical grade from 0.5 to 10.0, and sealed in a tamper-evident acrylic case — a “slab.” The grade is permanent and the encapsulation protects the book indefinitely. Every cert number on this page can be verified on the CGC Registry.
Page quality is graded separately from overall condition. Paper ages, and the color of the pages tells that story.
| Code | Name | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| W | White | Paper that appears the same or very near the same as the day it was printed. Only the slightest traces of aging are allowed to a small area, such as the corner. Most comic books printed after 1990 exhibit white pages due to the discontinued use of pulp paper at that time. Only a white page designation is allowed in the 10.0 grade. |
| OW/W | Off-White to White | Paper that is still white, but exhibits very slight aging to the outer edges. A significant number of comic books from the mid '70s to late '80s exhibit this page quality. This designation is the lowest allowed in the 9.9 grade. |
| OW | Off-White | Paper that exhibits very light aging through the middle of each page, or white pages that exhibit light aging to the outer edges. With rare exception, comic books considered for the grade of 9.8 or better must achieve at least an off-white page designation. |
| CR/OW | Cream to Off-White | Paper that appears white or off-white in the middle with aged outer edges, or exhibits an overall aged color that is more close to brown than white. This page quality is most prevalent in comic books from the '30s, '40s and '50s, but also includes a significant number of Silver Age comic books as well. |
| CR | Cream | Rarely given, this designation is for pages that are a uniform cream in color from the edges to the middle of each page. Early Silver Age DCs tend to exhibit cream pages more often than other comics from the same time period. |

Beyond the numeric grade, CGC’s label color tells you what kind of slab you’re looking at.
| Color | Label | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Universal | Standard CGC label. Unrestored, unsigned, no qualifiers — graded on its own merits. The bulk of every collection. | |
| Signature Series | Signed in front of a CGC witness who verifies authenticity. The book never leaves CGC custody between signing and encapsulation. | |
| Qualified | Reads "if it weren't for this one major issue, the grade would be X." A noted defect — missing coupon, married pages, unwitnessed signature — gets called out separately on the label so the book can be graded on its remaining merits without that one issue crashing the whole grade. | |
| Restored | Foreign material added to improve appearance — color touch, piece fill, tear seals, cleaning. Tier code is two-axis: letter (A = professional, B = moderate, C = amateur) × number (1 = slight amount, 5 = extensive amount). A-1 = slight professional touch (best); C-5 = extensive amateur work (worst). Fifteen possible combinations. | |
| Conserved | Structural repairs for preservation only — tear seals, staple replacement, archival cleaning. Does NOT include color touch, piece fill, or other aesthetic enhancement. CGC added this category in 2016 to give purely preservation-grade work a less-stigmatized home than the Restored label. Blue/grey. | |
| Pedigree | Books from a CGC-recognized original-owner collection — Edgar Church/Mile High, Allentown, Denver, and 58 others (61 total). Requires newsstand-purchase provenance and exceptional preservation. Gold label, usually paired with a Universal grade. The OG was Edgar Church. |
