The heart of #55 is its farewell to Jack Pierce: “Master Monster-Maker Mourned,” the obituary for the Universal makeup genius who sculpted Karloff’s Frankenstein Monster and Mummy by hand. It also carries an early appearance by a young Richard Corben — a significant issue for the makeup-and-history collector.

The craft’s great memorial. Jack Pierce built the Monster, the Mummy, and the Wolf Man with his hands, and Issue #55 mourned him properly when much of Hollywood didn’t — a cornerstone for any makeup-history collection, with early Richard Corben as the bonus.
